Over the past few decades, the economy of industrialised societies evolved from industrial economy to information economy and on to knowledge-based economy wherein the level and extent of activities relating to the generation, accessing, retrieving, processing, communication, application and use of information and knowledge are deemed to be an important parameter for measuring the socio-economic development level of nations. The individuals and corporations that possess and/or have access and the means to exploit knowledge resources become the more powerful entities in society.
