It is called "noninverting" because there is no sign inversion. A typical circuit is shown in Figure. With a finite op-amp gain Ao,

Since the ideal op amp draws no current,

i1 = i2

Also, as seen from Figure,

v2 = vi

In equating Equations, one gets

which is the gain of an ideal voltage follower. The same result applies if R1 →∞ (i.e., open circuit) for any finite R2.
