Calculate the concrete tensile strength

A 6 in. by 12 in. concrete cylinder resisted a transverse force of 55,000-lbf, at 28 days, in a split tensile cylinder test. Calculate the concrete tensile strength.

SOLUTION:  

fct = 2P/πDL = (2)(55,000-lbf) / π(6-in)(12-in) = 487-psi
