Q. Calculate standard state enthalpy of the substance?
Ans.
To determine ΔHof for calcium carbonate, calcium and carbon are burned in a calorimeter.
Notice that the reactants are elements in their standard state. We use a fraction of the amount of oxygen because we are interested in calculating the standard enthalpy of formation of one mole of compound.
The energy released in this experiment is 1206.9 kJ/mole.
Scientists have done lots of experiments to determine the enthalpies of formation of different substances. You probably have a table with common ones in your textbook.
