Counselling occurs in a reciprocal relationship. A warm trusting relationship between the counsellor and client requires to be built up if change is going to take place. The client look for empathy, sensitivity and respect from the counsellor. They will want to feel that the counsellor has the ability to see the situation as they do. The client can wonder whether they are free to express their real concerns.

(a) Describe how the counsellor can build a warm trusting relationship between himself and the client.

(b) Identify and explain carefully any TWO aspects which the counselor needs to consider in an encounter with a client.
