Biodiversity provides us with life -sustaining services. As discussed below, these ecosystem services have a much higher value than most people realize. At the ecosystem level, biodiversity provides the conditions and the process that sustain the global economy and an existence as a species. Individual species within ecosystems as well as ecosystems as a whole, are vital to human society as you will study in the following subsections. Even the most obscure organisms in an ecosystem are worth conserving.
