You are required to design the central section of the bicycle frame which consists of the seat tube, top tube, down tube and head tube. You can ignore the seat stays, chain stays and fork for a simplified analysis. A typical geometry of the section is shown in Figure 2, whereas the FEA analysis of a modified design is shown in Figure 3. The total load applied to the frame is 800N and you are free to constraint the frame using your engineering judgment. You are free to choose any design of bike and any dimensions of the tubes and the information provided in Figure is for guidance only.
You are advised to draw this design in solid edge or similar package and import this design into ABAQUS for FE analysis. You should choose a suitable material for the bicycle frame. The maximum stress in the material of your choice should be less than half the yield strength of that material (to allow for a factor of safety). You should also consider the weight of the bicycle frame and ease of fabrication e.g. choosing aluminum as material in your design could mean that it will be difficult to weld during manufacturing.
What is bending stress? The bending moment at section tends to bend or deflect beam and internal stresses resist its bending. The process of bending stops when the cross sectio
