Belt tension for V-belt:

What is V-belt. Drive expression of Ratio in belt tension for V-belt

Sol: The power from one shaft to the other shaft can be transmitted with the help of V-belt drive and rope drive. Figure given below shows a V-belt with a grooved pulley.

Sol: Let RN  = Normal reaction between the belt and sides with grooved pulley.

2a = Angle of groove

µ = Co-efficient of friction in between belt and pulley.
R = Total reaction in plane of groove.

Resolving forces vertically, we get

R = RN sin a + RN sin a

= 2RN sin a

RN  = (R/2) cosec a                                                                                                                                         ...(i)

Frictional resistance = µRN + µRN = 2µRN = 2µ(R/2)cosec a

= µR cosec a = R × mcosec a

As in flat belt frictional resistance is equal to µR, and in case of V-belt µcoseca X R

As a result,

Ratio of Tension in V-Belt:: T1/T2  = eµ.cosec a
