Belt and types of belt for transmission of power, Mechanical Engineering

Assignment Help:

Q.    What is belt? How many types of belt are used for the transmission of power?

Sol:  The power or rotary motion from one shaft to the other at a considerable distance is generally transmitted by means of flat belts, Vee belts or ropes, running over pulley. But pulleys contain some friction.

Types of Belts

The types of belts are:

1. Flat belt                                        2. V- belt                                        3. Circular Belt

Figure

The flat belt is used in the factories and workshops mostly. Where moderate amount of power is to be transmitted, from one pulley to the other, when the two pulleys are not apart more than 10m.

V-Belt

The V-belt is used where a great amount of power is to be transmitted, from one pulley to the other, when the two pulleys are very close to each other.

Circular Belt or Rope

The circular belt or rope is mostly used where a large amount of power is to be transmitted from one pulley to the other, when the two pulleys are apart more than 5m.
