What is the problem, opportunity, or challenge addressed in the article?
Executive Summary
Manipal Hospital is situated in Bangalore, known as the Garden city of India. This hospital is an addition to the Manipal family of health care institutions, which includes four medical and two dental, nursing and pharmacy colleges and ten hospitals with a total of around 5,000 beds. They are likely to expend a huge amount for computerization activities and the pilot project was likely to begin. They are facing the problem like Interconnectivity is lacking and the system is too old to cope with the increased work load and they do not have any connection between computers of different departments and also of different hospitals.
DSS and EIS can be used in hospital information system because DSS is an interactive computer based system which facilities solution of unstructured and semi structured problem of hospitals.
Supply chain information system may also be implemented to standardized and organize the work of its hospitals around the world. Same ERP software may be used in the same configuration in all its hospitals so that it can standardize and coordinate their work more precisely.
1. Analyzing a current OM technique
What is the problem, opportunity, or challenge addressed in the article?
Problem-
1. Interconnectivity is lacking and the system is too old to cope with the increased work load.
2. They do not have any connection between computers of different departments and also of different hospitals.
3. MIS do not have a separate department, but all MIS activities come under the finance controller.
4. The Hospitals does not have a low cost supplier network around the world. They do not have the database(Record) to identify each potential component's quality, availability and suppliers' history in Manipal Hospitals then will be able to use the information for the bulk purchases of equipment
Opportunity-
1. The hospital, considering its future expansions as well as anticipated increased workload is likely to entrust this task to one of the leading software companies for the full computerization of the hospital.
2. To expand the chain of hospitals and medical education around the world.Explore the opportunity in hospital research and development work.
3. To work for better motive like health across the world.Introduction of all high-tech systems, such as expert systems, executive information systems and DSS for the top management to take decisions on vital matters.
4. They may work towards a preventive approach, pinpointing all possible risk areas and offering solutions to each and every problem area with the cream of the medical fraternity and state-of-the-art equipment.
Challenges
1. While Implementing DSS, it would be challenge to handle the large database across the Globe.
2. Security system in DSS.
3. Research and Development-R & D always had been a challenge, inventing new technology for better health care.
4. Selection of good suppliers.
Q2) what is the solution, idea, approach, etc., recommended/implemented in the article?
Solve- There is requirement of DSS and EIS in hospital information system because DSS is an interactive computer based system which facilities solution of unstructured and semi structured problem of hospitals .DSS support many activities like spread sheet programs, personal database management system, model base management system, word processing package and other special program.
More recommended solution-
1. Supply chain information system to standardized and organize the work of its hospitals around the world.
2. Same ERP software may be used in the same configuration in all its hospitals so that it can standardize and coordinate their work more precisely
3. The hospital has to build a low cost rate network around the world.
4. They have built facilities such as campuses with water, sewer, computer lines and buildings for suppliers, close to its hospitals.
5. The campuses of hospitals should be identical so that they appear and execute the same way, despite of their location.
Q3) It will help with the following points in operations -
• Standardize the system
• More accurate and timely reporting
• Better decision making
• Increased productivity and efficiency
The problem will be solved completely by implementing following software-
1. Supply chain management information system (MIS).
2. ERP software.
3. One space web-based collaboration software.
Q4) takeaways-
ESS summarizes and presents data at the highest level of aggregation in the hospitals. Usually they involve presenting reports in standard formats and they often involve graphics, the goal of computer-based ESS is to provide top executive with immediate and easy access to selective information about key factors that are critical to accomplishing a hospitals strategic objectives.
Q5) what are the limitations of the technique?
Solve- LIMITATIONS-
1. It requires time to implement.
2. heavy investment(cost related issue)
3. Require training of system for staff
4. Require skill trained worker
5. Security risk
