At the time of the American Civil War, the United States' economy was based primarily on agriculture. The process of industrialization had just begun in some areas of the Northeast. In the decades after the war, the United States experienced an industrial revolution. Then, in the twentieth century, the country continued its phenomenal economic growth until it became the world's greatest industrial power.
