Various acute complications of diabetes mellitus are described in this unit. Acute complications develop within a short period of time. These are due to improper treatment of diabetes, like missing the prescribed insulin injections and or oral hypoglycaemic drugs. Acute complications are further precipitated by a number of factors like physical and mental stress and factors like infections, myocardial infarction (heart attack) and stroke (paralysis) etc.
The acute complications of diabetes mellitus are:
1) Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
2) Non-Ketotic Hyperosmolar Diabetic Coma (NKHDC)
3) Hypoglycaemia
