Two Sources, Reporting, and Opinions
The two sources that I found which reported on Zephaniah's case are the Newsweek and the Dallas Observer. The Newsweek leads with a victim narrative, as shared in the article #Shewas16 trends on twitter over murder case against Zephi Trevino, alleged trafficking victim, "The hashtag #SheWas16 trended on Twitter amid a campaign to convince officials to drop murder charges against Zephaniah "Zephi" Trevino, who supporters say was an innocent victim of child sex trafficking during a fatal shooting in 2019" (Slisco, A., 2021). The Dallas Observer points out how codefendants highlight Trevino as the mastermind of the robbery, both sources report all the facts surrounding the case.
Ethical Dilemma and Ethical Decisions
The elements of this case that create an ethical dilemma stem from the judge's decision to certify Zephaniah and try her as an adult, this seemingly small detail drastically changes the outcome. The article North Texas teen Zephi Trevino will be tried as adult, court rules outlines the severity of this change, "Trevino was 16 at the time of the murder and turns 18 this month. As an adult, she faces the possibility of life in prison without parole" (Vaughn, J., 2021). The ethical decision I would make for her incarceration, rehabilitation, and reintegration, would all fall on the fact that she was a juvenile at the time of the incident.
