Part 1:

You are out on your friend's boat in Mission Bay soaking up rays and fishing for tuna. You have a big fat worm on the end of your fishing line. You are holding your fishing rod so the worm is completely submerged under water to tempt the fish.

Draw a free body diagram of the worm.

Now you pull your rod up to check if the worm is still there, so now the worm is suspended above the water. Draw a free body diagram for the worm in this case.

Are there any differences between your diagrams? Explain.

Is it easier to hold the worm above the water or under water? Explain.
