case study 

A guy of 35 years old who suffers from a learning handicap and has a history of being abused and neglected. He has a history of engaging in self-inflicted violence as well as substance and alcohol misuse. He is presently jobless and residing at a facility that provides assisted housing. Anxiety, despair, and poor self-esteem are the difficulties he is now dealing with.

A lady in her 30s who suffers from a physical impairment and comes from a history of poverty and abusive relationships in the home. Because she has spent the most of her life in and out of hospitals, she has had very little opportunities to build social skills or participate in activities that have any significance to her. Her primary concerns consist of feelings of alienation, worry, and sadness.

Your role 

Assume you are a newly recruited community advocacy officer whose role is to represent the needs, interests and concerns of service users. As the role is new there are no specific structures and processes in place so part of your role will be to set these up.

Assume too that:

• your organisation's objectives include to meet services user needs to the best possible extent by representing their issues and concerns and advocating to key people on their behalf.
• Priorities for the organisation are all underrepresented groups which you can assume are the clients/client groups you choose.

It's now 3 months since you started your advocacy and representation role with the following results:

• You have secured funding for the activities you identified as priorities. Funding applied for was $20,000  and a grant of $15,000 was provided.
• You have conducted a number of community workshops to raise awareness and discuss ideas - the attendance at meeting has been as follows: Workshop1 - 4 people, Workshop 2 - 9 people, Workshop 3 - 10 people.
• A community survey addressing your client group was sent out - out of the 100 people you sent it to, 20 responded.
