Reformers argued for a vernacular translation of the Bible, that is, a Bible written in the common tongue of the people. They argued that the Bible was written in Latin and only educated Churchmen could read Latin. Therefore, no one could challenge the Church when it came to interpreting the Bible in order to justify its policies.

The Catholic Church argued that the Bible requires specialized training to understand, and that the words of the Bible could be twisted to justify nearly any action. If millions of lay Christians could read the Bible, then there would be countless biblical interpretations, and the result would be endless civil and religious wars over whose biblical interpretation was correct.

Given what you have learned, which side do you believe had the stronger argument and why?
