Assessment 1a/b: Scale evaluation
In this assessment, you will be writing a report (< 3,000) to assess the validity of a new brief, 5-item measure of religiousness that you are helping me create. The items have already been created and a dataset has already been collected (in your folder for you). You will be expected to develop hypotheses of the expected psychometrics properties and validity of a one-dimensional measure, if this is a good scale of the construct at hand. There is a skeleton-paper (i.e., Help file) already available to you to guide your writing and what is called for in the assessment. You will need to extract what you need from this file for your assessment and some of it will/can count towards your total words. In it you will find some hints on analyses. I have also provided you with some references that you can take or leave as you see fit.
Assessment 1a (< 1,500)
- Introduction
- Literature Review
- Hypotheses
- Participants and Procedure (provided)
- Measures (provided)
Assessment 1b (< 1,500)
- Abstract
- Results
- Discussion
- Limitations and Conclusions
- Tables/Figures
The References are part of both sections, they may grow from Section a to b. and are not counted in the word-count.
Here are some steps to get you started.
1. Do literature searches including theoretical and psychometric work; some are provided already in the Help File.
2. Get to understand what is in the datafile. It is well labeled.
3. Run Factor Analysis (PCA). You might need to look up how to report this stuff in a paper or two.
4. Test internal consistency within the weeks using Cronbach's alpha.
5. Create the brief religiousness scales by averaging (i.e., mean) the five items per week.
6. Test reliability across the three weeks with Cronbach's alpha and correlating (r) average scores on each week with one another.
7. Create a single index of religiousness by averaging the three week's scores.
8. Run validity tests.
9. Create APA-formatted tables/figures if needed.
10. Try to make sense of what you found based on point 1 and what you have learned about the scale's properties from the process.
