Writing and Research Assignment: Thesis and Introduction

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to assist the student in writing an introduction for his research paper and to formulate at least a tentative thesis. It will greatly guide you in the preparation of your research paper. The introduction and the thesis may change later as more research is conducted.

Objective

The objective of the introduction of your research paper is to introduce the topic, establish the problem, state a thesis and interest the reader in continuing perusing your research paper. This assignment will assist you finishing another stepping stone to a successful research paper. Always bear the reader and the audience in mind.

Requirements:

• Write an introduction that makes up in size about 10% of the whole research paper and add a well phrased thesis that might help you guiding your research and the writing of your research paper.

Requirement Details

• Just as the name implies an introduction introduces a topic. It is introduced from the general to the specific. Write in a form that someone understands who has no idea about the topic and the discipline your research paper is about. It is necessary to provide some background for the reader in the introduction.

• Point out the specific problem that you are going to tackle in your research paper.

• Tell the reader about the methodology that you are going to use. In which way exactly will you solve the research problem?

• Make a thesis statement. It is the central overall thesis that will run like a red line through your research paper. A thesis statement has only a few sentences and advances a general idea that will be dealt with in detail and while providing lots of evidence in the main body of the research paper.

• Optional: Provide a hook, something interesting, remarkable, funny or humorous that motivates the reader to continue with your text.
