Assignment - Impact of Solitary Confinement on Mental Health Case Study
Survey Mini-Study CRJ 413 Online - Surveys are our go to research method when we want to learn about people's beliefs, attitudes, behavior or preferences. Surveys give us the opportunity to measure these things by asking directly asking our participants. There are some potential limitations with self-report survey data, including:
Survey takers misinterpreting the survey items
Which reduces the reliability of our measurement.
Some difficulty can arise in the response options we provide survey takers, the instructions provided, or the wording used for each item.
Survey takers not responding honestly to the survey items.
Which reduces the validity of our measurement.
Some response sets include social desirability, malingering, and random responding.
Our challenge for our survey mini-study is to try to design a reliable, valid, and useful information related to our research topic that we are using for our literature review. (Please keep in mind that 'useful' information is related to what we know about the topic we are conducting our survey on).
To complete your survey mini-study, please:
1. Start by identifying the topic of your survey and the variables you are hoping to measure
2. Next, write your survey items (questions)- please include from 5-10 items; and post your survey to our week three discussion forum for your classmates to take
a. Please pay careful attention to the response options provided-ask yourself, will participant answers give me the data I am looking for?
3. After collecting your data, please write-up a 2-3 page review of the following and submit to complete your survey mini-study:
a. What type of items (examples- open-ended; Likert scale, rank-ordered, etc.) did you choose? Why did you feel this was the best way to collect and measure data for your survey?
b. What are some of the advantages of using a survey design to address your topic? What are some of the potential disadvantages of survey design? Can you identify any potential response sets or biases (such as social desirability, random responding, etc.) that might have influenced survey respondent's answers?
c. What were the results of your survey? Do you feel they are reliable? Are the results valid? Can you identify any potential sources of error?
d. How might you use this survey's results to continue your research for your literature review assignment?
