Advanced Laboratory and Research Practice
Structured Laboratory Report SLR
You will produce a lab write up in the style of a short communications article within your field of study. Communications are a short manuscript type and are commonly used to quickly share the findings of research. Typically, there is a three week turn around on these articles. They consist of a paper-style presentation of the background/context to the lab, aims and hypothesis tested methodology and results, analysis and interpretation of the data appropriately referenced.
• Title
• Abstract-no more than 250 words
• Introduction -Should present the purpose of the study and its relationship to earlier work in the field; it is not meant to be an extensive review of the literature.
• Results -Should describe the data collected. Any chemical equations, structural formulas or mathematical equations should be placed between successive lines of text.No more than four figures.
• Discussion -Should focus on the interpretation of the results rather than repeating information from the Results section. This section should also include suggestions for further work.
• Experimental procedures - Should describe the overall experimental design briefly but with sufficient information to permit a qualified reader to repeat the experiments. Previously published procedures should be referenced, and modifications given in detail where necessary to repeat the work.
• References -For Pharmaceutical Analysis and Analytical Chemistry this will be in the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) style. For all other courses we will use the library recommended America Psychological Association 7 (APA7) style.
Word limit must not exceed 2500 including the abstract, all references, in text citations, figure legends.
