Non-profit organizations are challenged with ensuring organizations stay sustainable, and that occurs when funds are continuously generated. The most effective way for NPO's to manage the diverse and potentially conflicting needs of stakeholders is to have clear expectations and procedures of what and how the funds will be used. NPO's should consider adopting or improving management practices and by having set procedures in place (Herman & Renz, 1998, p. 35). Additionally, NPOs must seek out donors that will fund a particular project over multiple years with ongoing checkpoints so investors will know how those funds have been allocated. No one wants to invest in a company when they lack proper systems and controls. Thusly, donors and volunteers are essential to an organization's success. It goes back to building trusting and collaborative relationships.

A nonprofit definitely needs to generate funding. There isn't always a product to sell to create income, such as with a nonprofit animal rescue. They provide a service to the community by assisting homeless or abused animals and finding them suitable homes. With an animal rescue, the mission is usually to properly care for homeless and abused animals and to also stop the creation of more unwanted animals through spay and neuter programs. With a nonprofit organization, such as this one, research is definitely an integral part of managing the funding-effectiveness cycle. A nonprofit leader needs to know what the public is looking for in that type of organization and be sure to fulfill those needs. When certain types of nonprofit organizations band together in an event to rally even more attention and funds to go toward their missions, the success rate can be much better (Michelson Found Animals Foundation, 2016). The most effective ways to generate funding is through entrepreneurial efforts such as nonprofit stores that live through product donations, marketing, and positive public relations (Strauss, 2009).
