5. Nowadays, everyone is online, and our personal information is digitized. New technologies are also making it easier for governments to expand surveillance on basis of national security. Privacy is one of the civil liberties protected by the U.S. Constitution and civil liberties are essential to democracy. Do you think that national security outweighs the right to privacy? Do you think a reduction in the quality of civil liberties through surveillance results in a reduction in the quality of democracy?
6. The increased use of social media has changed the means of political participation. Especially Gen Z expresses their political opinions and engages political activities on social media via their smart phones. Some scholars argue that social media alleviates, whereas others say it intensifies polarization. What is your opinion on the relationship between the social media and polarization? We also witness the growing partisan polarization in Congress, which resulted in a more divided government throughout the last decade. Do you think that Congress is a reflection of our polarized society, or do the Members of the Congress influence the public opinion and reinforce polarization?
