OVERVIEW - The objective of this module is to develop an understanding of how organizations develop strategies to achieve and sustain a competitive advantage. Strategy has been variously defined but a working definition is the: "determination of the long term goals and objectives of an enterprise, and the adoption of courses of action and the allocation of resources necessary for carrying out these goals." (Alfred Chandler). Two questions are central to strategy: "What business should we be in?" and "How should we compete?"
AIMS -
- To provide an awareness of the context within which strategic management is based.
- To make the student familiar with some of the theoretical models of strategic management.
- To present an understanding of how companies derive and sustain a competitive advantage.

Full Details of Assessments:
Group Presentations: The objective is to present an analysis of a market using the Porter Five Forces model as a framework. The presentation is expected to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts involved, an ability to apply these concepts to a real situation and an appraisal of the limitations of concepts and models used, suggesting possible extensions of the model to improve our understanding of the market.
Each group will be required to make a 15-minute presentation and then answer questions.
Individual Assignment: Students are first required to select one company from the list below:

Next identify a key strategic issue facing the company and analyse the issue through the application of relevant concepts and models covered in the module. From your analysis, how would you recommend the company respond to the issue?
Hint: you may want to think about your company's external/internal environment, its acquisition/divestment options, outsourcing decisions or other corporate strategy issues. Try to put the emphasis on analysis and not merely an extended description of what the company does.
