Assignment -
The last lesson's readings were from popular press sources, especially PopMatters, that described the music we covered in detail, but in different ways than most of the authors whom we read through the term. For this reflection paper, you're going to fill in the blanks by choosing one of the artists from the final lesson and one of the themes below. Your post should be a persuasive short essay that ties the artist and the theme together. To help build your argument, choose another artist or case study from our course AND an artist from your own listening practices/personal experiences that also illustrate the value, importance, relevance of this theme to black popular music. Your writing should not just be subjective statements, but organized, evidence-based analysis supported by citations from sources from the course.
Reading the PopMatters articles should have been a positive benchmark for how much you've learned throughout the semester. It's my hope that you'll continue listening with "big ears" for the complex and rich meanings in popular music and that you'll share what you've learned through continued conversations with friends and peers.
