Part 01:
Place two tea bags in a 250 mL beaker.
Add 100 mL of boiling water to the beaker.
Steep the tea bags for 10 minutes then remove and discard them.
Transfer the cooled tea solution to a separatory funnel.
Add 25 mL of dichloromethane to the separatory funnel.
Stopper the funnel and shake vigorously for 1 minute to allow phase separation.
Carefully drain the lower dichloromethane layer into a clean Erlenmeyer flask.
Repeat the extraction process three times to ensure complete caffeine extraction.
Add anhydrous sodium sulfate to the solution for drying.
Concentrate the resulting caffeine extract using a rotary evaporator.
Compare the isolated caffeine to a standard caffeine solution using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) for identity confirmation.
Part 02:
Clamp the column vertically on a ring stand, ensuring the stopcock is closed, and fill the column to 1/3 capacity with dichloromethane.
Use a glass rod to push a glass wool plug to the column's bottom, then layer nearly 1 cm of clean sand on the plug and level it.
Introduce the weighed adsorbent through a powder funnel, rinse with a small amount of solvent, and allow ~2 mL of solvent to flow through with the stopcock open, aiding packing with gentle tapping.
Add an additional ~1 cm of sand on top of the adsorbent column, prepare labeled test tubes, and add 5 mL of dichloromethane to the column, repeating the process with a 50% CH2Cl2 and 50% ethyl acetate mixture until caffeine is undetectable via TLC.
Collect the solution in 15 bottles, pour it into a round-bottomed flask, concentrate it using rotary evaporation, and measure the melting point.
