Inflammation is a response from the body to various stress factors, for example, infections from outside bacteria or viruses. The white blood cells arrive at the site and counteract to protect the area. Intestinal inflammation, moreover, "inflammatory bowel disease, and certain medications can make it difficult for a person to maintain healthy nutrition" (Malnutrition and IBD. Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, 2022). The small intestine is responsible for the absorption of nutrients, so when the small intestine is inflamed, it can cause problems digesting food and absorbing nutrients, whereas when the large intestine is inflamed, it can cause problems absorbing water and electrolytes. Some of the nutrients that are normally absorbed are proteins, fats, sugars, vitamins, and minerals. Depending on the size of the area affected, nutrient deficiencies and malabsorption are more significant. Inflammation can also lead to "loss of digestive enzymes, a decreased breakdown and absorption of food products, the loss of normal absorption of protein and fat, weight loss, and malnutrition" (Pathmakanthan, S., & Hawkey, C. J. (2000, October 1)). The most common gastrointestinal diseases that cause intestinal inflammation and have a great clinical impact are chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBW), Chron's disease (CD), and ulcerative colitis (UC).
