What do we know about the pathology of Parkinson's disease? Loss of dopaminergic-creating neurons in the substantia nigra.

What do we know about the causes of PD? Environmental (paraquat, metal ions) vs genetics. Where are the gaps in research in relation to cause?

What are the known risk factors?

The roles of oxidative stress and development of alpha-synuclein.

Presenting symptoms - motor and non-motor manifestations and diagnostic criteria.

What do we know about current treatments? Medications, alternative therapies including physical exercise, Speech and language therapy, mindfulness therapy.

Issues with current treatments - benefits vs downfalls including levodopa therapy, MAOIs, deep brain stimulation.

New approaches needed - emerging field of nutrition as medicine and role of diet in Parkinsons disease - in terms of improvement in constipation, gut microbiome relationship ?does parkinson's disease start in the gut? Current research relating to dairy intake and increase risk Parkinson's disease.

Role of antioxidants and PD progression/prevention.

Evidence for caffeine, smoking (inverse relationship for latter).

Prodromal PD and possible reversal stage where dietary and environmental exposures can impact outcome.

Evidence from Mediterranean diets and prodromal PD.

Evidence of dairy consumption and increased PD

Evidence for protein-redistribution diet and motor performance.

Fibre and increased bioavailability of levodopa.

Leads us to the research gap - can a whole-foods plant based diet improve symptoms of PD?
