Research Paper -

Write an original four-to-six-page research paper that focuses on key themes in American Studies. Students will choose a cultural artifact (i.e. a song, movie, dance, object, set of laws, novel, etc.) and develop an argument using three-to-four secondary sources. Students may draw all their sources from the syllabus but are encouraged to read outside of the course material. This paper is meant to provoke critical engagement with course themes and methods.

1. Proposal - Students will be required to submit a 250-word (no more than one-page double spaced) proposal to the instructor outlining what cultural artifact they have chosen to write about. They will need to describe the artifact in some detail and explain why they have chosen to analyze it. They must also develop a preliminary argument tied to questions of identity, production, consumption.

2. Thesis & Sources - Students will be required to submit a thesis statement and five secondary sources.

3. Final Paper - Students must submit their final paper.
