Research Paper Individual assessment -
Task: You are required to write a 2,000-word research paper on a major or mega event of your choice. This assignment is designed to assess your ability to research, understand and apply theoretical frameworks in the context of major or mega events.
You can choose (choose one event from below):
i) Olympic game: Rio 2016 or PyeongChang 2018
ii) Formula one motor race: 2018 Singapore Grand Prix
iii) Music festivals: 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festivals
iv) World Cup: FIFA World Cup Russia 2018
Within the framework of sustainable development, you are required to present an academic paper concentrating on at least one of the following key concepts considered by this unit:
- Event experience and meanings;
- Authenticity and commodification of events;
- Event tourism and host and guest interactions;
- Event design;
- Event outcomes and impacts (e.g., positive, negative, socio-cultural, environmental, tangible, intangible, short-term, and long-term);
- Antecedents and decision making (e.g., motivations, event travel career trajectory);
- HR/Volunteer management;
- Events and public policy;
- Impacts on different stakeholder groups.
Theoretical frameworks from related fields of study are encouraged - academic sources from tourism, management studies, anthropology, sociology, psychology, history and the social sciences, in general, all provide fertile ground for your exploration.
Format: The paper must be written in the third person, with an introduction, a main body and a conclusion. You are required to provide a detailed Reference List in accordance with the APA style (6th).
The essay must include:
1. Abstract (150 - 200 words): this is not included in the total words count
2. Introduction (need to have index referencing):

3. Literature reviews (talk about theory and concept)

- Authenticity and commodification of events
- Social exchange theory (you can choose to write about this or not)

4. Discussions and findings (good and bad impacts, can't talk about good impacts only)
- Stakeholders (eg. sponsors, participant): primary, secondary
- Economic outcomes: eg. Tax, GDP, GNP, revitalisation of economy etc
- Social cultural outcomes: eg. community pride, community involvement, quality of living, and negative things etc
- Environmental outcomes: eg. carbon food prints, ecological etc

7. References (APA style 6th):
- at least have 20 references
- 5 of them must be from year 2014 onwards and have to be current academic references, which means it has to be come from purely review articles or from the book "Event Studies" by Donald Getz and Stephen J. Page (third edition)
