Information Systems Modelling Assignment -

Aim: The purpose of this coursework is to provide you with an opportunity to try out various IS modelling techniques which will be taught in the module. The criteria for marking will be made available in MOLE and discussed in class sessions.

Instructions: You are members of a team of consultants and have been given the task of carrying out a thorough analysis of the existing business processes and systems of the logistics and distribution company, Spotless Ltd. Your work will determine weaknesses and potential areas for improvement which will lead to a design for a new integrated system solution, in which you will specify the logic of the improved business processes, the new system and appropriate supporting business requirements and compatible technical/systems requirements.

You are provided with a set of documents. Some initial interviews have been carried out with various personnel within the company and the transcripts are available to you. Your brief is to use these documents to carry out the analysis described above. This analysis will result in a set of separate deliverables as outlined below. Base your analysis on the information that is available to you. There is no totally 'right' answer to this exercise, although there are clearly some wrong answers.

Mimicking the reality of practice, your work is divided into three different stages: first (Formative Analysis Report), a group effort to identify the main issues as seen from the points of view of the main informants from the case study; second (Individual Report), an individual effort where each member of the group develops an analysis of one identified business process; and third (Group Report), a group effort to integrate the analyses of all individual reports to propose a new solution to serve the organisation.

Component Specifications:

1. Formative Analysis Report

First, and as a group, you are asked to produce the Rich Picture and corresponding CATWOE and RD for this case study. You must illustrate the different points of view of the actors in the case study within the rich picture. This first component must contain a description of your interpretation of the case study.

2. Individual Report

Using the document entitled "IT Consultants Information Sheet" each member of the group will choose one of the business processes identified in that document. For their (unique) chosen business process, each group member will produce an individual report representing that business process (using high-level UML business use case diagrams/use case descriptions, BPMN workflow diagrams and data models with DFDs). This report must contain a full description of the business processes and data models with clear justifications of all your interpretations.

3. Group Report

You are then requested to integrate these contributions and present a global business solution. This solution should be expressed in terms of business requirements and technical/systems requirements, include some modelling that will allow you to understand the system from a user perspective and propose an integrated systems solution using a deployment diagram. These must be presented and described in detail in one final report. The requirements which you propose must aim to address the problems that the users currently encounter.

Note - It is an individual report focusing on the process:  ORDER PROCESSING - TRADES DESK a number of BPMN diagrams, DFDs and BUC descriptions required.
