Question: Your thesis statement is a one word sentence that (usually) comes at the end of the introduction paragraph. The thesis statement conveys the argument that the rest of the essay will make. Any argument that the essay makes must be covered by the thesis.

The thesis then must be specific enough that the audience knows what you will be arguing and broad enough so that you need four or five pages to make the argument.

The thesis also needs to be an arguable statement--and a statement worth arguing--a values based statement that you can reasonably expect your audience will not fully agree with.

For instance: "Allowing children to legally work before the age of 15 should not be viewed as taboo because it would give children the benefit of work experience, personal responsibility, and it would also keep children from working under the table, which would (contrary to assumptions) guarantee them proper work rights."
