Question: Essay or report and a plan (200 words or equivalent).
In your assessment, you must:
• Write on an issue and example academic from the approved list Climate change (My Topic for Essay and Plan)
• Johan Rockstrom (Environmental Science)
• Hilary Bambrick (Bioanthropology)
• Use a minimum of six (6) resources, including at least three (3) academic resources and at least one (1) resource on the role of academics in public life
• Use appropriate referencing. You can use either Deakin Harvard or Deakin APA styles
• Submit a plan with your completed assessment.
You will write an essay or report on the following topic:
In what ways can academics contribute on issues of social significance in times of uncertainty and change?
• Compare and contrast the work of two academics (my selected academics are Johan Rockstrom (Environmental Science)
And Hilary Bambrick (Bioanthropology)who contributed to a particular global issue(Climate Change in my case). Evaluate their contributions and state which academic you judge to be more effective and why.
The central part of this question is in bold. This is the overall question you need to answer in your essay. It is a very broad question, which is then refined in the sentences that follow. You discuss this big question by comparing and contrasting the work of two different academics that address a particular global issue in some way. This can be through academic research publications, as well as media and social media forums, and their work for not-for-profit, government or other types of organisations. As well as comparing the different types of communication, also consider their experience, depth and breadth of research, types of research, and any other factors that might shape your decision about the effectiveness of their contribution. You should use the readings listed in step 2 of the instructions below to guide you.
While the focus must be on how your two example academics contribute to the issue, you may need to say a few things about the issue itself to provide context, and about different ways one can respond to the issue. You can use an authoritative website to provide support for the significance of your particular issue. Any good introductory academic text that gives an overview of the issue as a whole will also be helpful, as will government reports or statements by international bodies such as the United Nations, or other reputable websites. Remember that you are not required to solve the global issue, or even discuss it at length. The global issue simply frames the question of academic contribution to the issue.
Finally, the last part of the assessment question asks to make an evaluation or judgement based on your research as to the effectiveness of the contribution and why you believe this is so. It is important that you are able to show that come to a judgement about what makes an effective contribution, and to explain your reasoning in your assignment. This demonstrates to your marker that you have developed skills in critical thinking, and are able to give an evaluation based on research and evidence.
Step by Step Instructions to Complete Assessment 3
Step 1: Research
This assessment requires a minimum of six (6) resources, including at least three (3) academic resources and at least one (1) resource on the role of academics in public life.
Step 2: Develop your interpretive framework
Go to the reading list. Under the sub-heading 'assignment 3 resources' select your reading on how academics contribute to public life and/or issues. Using your in-depth reading skills (from week 4) as you read ask yourself the following questions:
What are some of the ways that academics contribute to public life and/or issues?
Which of these do you think are important in terms of the issue that you are addressing?
Choose approx. three (3) ways that academics contribute, and use these to analyse your example academics, and to inform your own evaluation.
Note: you need to use one or more of the readings in the list provided. Do not source other readings outside this list.
I will send the reading list once you agree to start the assignment
Step 3: Write up your plan
Use the essay structure below to guide your plan. You could also do a visual plan, such as a mind map. You can upload this as an image at the top of your assignment, or as a separate document.
Introduction
o Clarify how you intend to interpret or limit the question
o Provide an overview of your argument and the supporting points
Body: Plan to add a paragraph for each argument, including:
o Topic sentence stating the main points
o Sentences elaborating each point with supporting evidence
o Concluding sentence summarising the points, linking to next paragraph/argument
Conclusion
o Reiterate the claims in the introduction and refer back to the topic. If you have not included an evaluation in your final body paragraph, make sure you include it here.
Reference List
o Include a list of all references that you cited (this is not included in the word count)
Step 4: Write up your plan
If you choose the report options, you should include headings, subheadings and dot points as part of your final submission.
Will send an example of plan
Step 5: Edit and review
• Check your draft against assessment topic to ensure you that you have answered all parts of the question.
• Check your draft against marking rubric and requirements for desired grade
