Question: A deacon at St. Joseph the Worker Church had the theory that attendance at formal church services was a good indicator of the number of hours an individual volunteered. He randomly selected 12 individual volunteers and collected the required information. The deacon wanted to measure the strength and direction of any association. He also wanted a method whereby he might predict the number of hours volunteered by a person who attends church on average four times per month. Since you are an active volunteer and a student of statistics, he asked for your help. You have to select the appropriate statistical technique, write the null and alternative hypotheses, do the analysis, and interpret the results. The deacon's data are as follows:
