Lab Assignment - Lab for Statistics

You are helping a psychologist study the attitudes young Americans have towards Italians before and after watching "Jersey Shore," a television show that followed young Italian Americans. You gather data from 27 incoming freshmen at a university and measure their attitudes 1) before watching the show and 2) after watching the show. You use an attitude rating scale that ranges from 1 to 15 (1 = most negative attitude, 15 = most positive attitudes).

You will use SPSS (a statistical program) to conduct your analysis. You will make some calculations of your own using the data.

1. Write notations for a null hypothesis and an alternative hypothesis if you are doing a two-tailed two related samples t test studying the effect "Jersey Shore" may have on the attitude toward Italian Americans.

2. On Excel, create a bar graph with the mean values for the "before attitude" and the "after attitude".  Include standard error bars.  Below the graph, write whether you can visually see a significant difference.

3. Write out the statistical decision of the two-related samples t test with correct notation using an alpha of .05.  (SPSS calculates the t value and df)

4. Are you retaining or rejecting the null hypothesis?

5. Calculate the estimated Cohen's d. Determine the effect size.

6. According to the results of this test done with young Americans, would watching "Jersey Shore" give a more positive or more negative attitude towards Italian Americans? Explain.

7. Write two paragraphs reporting your results in APA format (follow the instructions below as they will assure you follow APA format).
