Question: Eumaeus and Melanthius in many ways are opposites to one another. Eumaeus is honorable and loyal, of noble birth, while Melanthius is treacherous and disloyal, and of low birth. Choose one of the two characters and spend fifteen minutes writing from his perspective. Write in the first person with that character's voice. Get inside his mind and tell the story from his point of view. What does he see? How does he feel? What does he want?

As you are writing, though, challenge yourself to go beyond Homer's basic description, and provide a deeper context. Don't necessarily make Melanthius a villain or Eumaeus a hero; can you devise more to their story to give us a more complex view than Homer's (e.g. tell Melanthius's backstory of becoming a slave in a way that makes us sympathize with him, or make it so Eumaeus knew all along that the beggar was Odysseus and only was kind to him in order to earn a reward)?
