Earthquakes - The Project
In the past several years there have been a number of newsworthy earthquakes, many of which we have discussed in class. These include earthquakes in:
1. 2008 - Sichuan Province, China (Wenchuan earthquake)
2. 2010 - Haiti
3. 2010-2012 - Christchurch, NZ
4. 2014 - Napa region, CA
5. 2016 - Amatrice, Italy
For one of these events, produce a brief (about 400 word) news report that describes the event that occurred, its effects, and addresses the current state of recovery. Your report should take the format of a news article, similar to one that might be found in a university newspaper.
Hints and tips...
1. Go over the writing tips I gave you on Canvas for the first writing assignment again (lecture slides for April 17, 2019 - Geo100_Volcanoes7.pdf).
2. Make sure you write for the audience and style of the assignment. This is a news report not a science report. Read other news reports on earthquakes to get ideas but be careful to use your own words.
3. Use the feedback you got from your first paper to improve your writing for this second assignment.
4. Remember to include works cited/bibliography at the end for anything that you cite.
5. Suggested structure for this paper: 3 paragraphs (sections/thoughts):
a. Paragraph 1 - Identify event analyzed; indicate what makes it newsworthy (nature of damages, why it was unexpected, etc.)
b. Paragraph 2 - Details of the situation. Remember our focus is on how things have (or have not) recovered/improved since the event.
c. Paragraph 3 - Why the situation is how it is. This can be based on your analysis (i.e., a bit of your opinion can come through here).
