Learning outcomes - On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:

5. Acquire an ability to locate the media in relevant social contexts and in relation to its industrial needs, i.e., in terms of funding, producing, marketing and transmitting.

Assessment Item 3: Major Essay

Write an essay on of the rise and/or impact of a 'global media' in a town, city or country of your choosing, preferably within the Asia-Pacific region.

In the essay, you should:

Define 'global media' and explain the different reasons for their formation in, or influence on, the town, city or country of your choosing.

• Think about the factors or circumstances that enabled global media to thrive or gain influence and prominence in the town, city or country you chose.

Identify and introduce (in approximately 500 words or a maximum of 2 pages) either a global media outlet/site (e.g., newspaper, radio, magazine, television channel/network or online website).

Highlight some attributes of your chosen media outlet/site and compare them with/against the attributes of mainstream local media outlet/sites and other global media outlets/sites.

Explain the impact of the global media outlet or site you selected by describing its influence and/or the changes it effected on the town, city or country that you chose.

• Provide examples that can illustrate or demonstrate the influence and changes that you are describing in your essay.

Incorporate key theories and concepts of global media - from the unit as well as your own scholarly research - to critique the development of 'global media' more broadly.
