Purpose:
I. The research essay is your opportunity to produce a final written document of your investigation into a focused research question regarding one of your interests or communities.
II. Use this essay to showcase what you have learned in English 1101 and 1102 about rhetorical argumentation, evidence, audience, support, analysis, source integration, documentation, and college-level academic writing.
Goal: Write a 1200 to 1500 words research essay in which you investigate a focused research question regarding one of your interests or communities.
Practical Steps:
I. Write a focused introduction that provides a brief background for your research question. Use the central message of your research proposal to inform and/or persuade your audience.
II. At the end of your introduction, include clear thesis statement that outlines the main ideas of your research essay.
III. Write 4-5 logically organized body paragraphs that develop the main ideas of your research.
IV. Use strong topic sentences that forecast the main idea of each paragraph.
V. Use fluent transition phrases leading into and/or out of each body paragraph.
VI. In each paragraph, support your main ideas with evidence and examples from 5-7 credible, documented sources.
VII. Use attribution tags and/or in-text citations of summary, paraphrases, and quotes from documented sources.
VIII. In each paragraph, analyze your evidence and examples with your own critical thinking.
IX. Write a paragraph that acknowledges and refutes opposing ideas with fair reasoning.
X. Compose a meaningful conclusion that furthers the significance of the conversation and does not repeat the main ideas of the essay.
