Step-by-Step Guide to Research Design Critique -
1. Research Question
a. Write down the main research question of your article.
b. If it doesn't specify one explicitly, write out what you think it is.
c. Is the question descriptive, correlational, or causal?
d. Can you clearly identify the important dependent and independent variables from the question?
2. Theory
a. What is the theory or argument underlying the relationship between variables?
b. This may be explicitly stated or it might be implied.
3. Hypotheses
a. Are there any explicit hypotheses?
b. Are they grounded in theory or prior literature?
c. If there aren't any hypotheses offered, what is your hypothesis and why?
4. Variables
a. What is/are the dependent variable(s) of interest?
b. What is/are the independent variable(s) of interest?
c. How are the variables measured, e.g., administrative data such as test scores, surveys with set responses, etc.?
d. Pick one variable, what's an alternative way that it could have been measured?
5. Measurement Validity and Reliability
a. Do you think the variables as measured capture the underlying concepts of interest? Why or why not?
b. Do the variables as measured capture all of the dimensions of the concept (content validity)?
c. Do you think the measurements are reliable?
6. Sampling
a. Population
i. What is the population of interest?
ii. Who is the research trying to study?
b. Sampling Procedure
i. How did they collect the sample?
ii. Was it a convenience sample of whoever happened to be around?
iii. Was it random sampling from a population?
c. Representativeness
i. Is the sample size large?
ii. Is the sample representative of the broader population of interest?
iii. This has important implications for external validity.
7. Causality
a. Three conditions for causality
i. Is there correlation between the independent and dependent variables?
ii. Does the potential cause take place in time before the effect?
iii. Is the relationship nonspurious? In other words, what some potential spurious variables that are related to both the independent and dependent variables that could be causing a spurious relationship?
b. Counterfactual
i. Does the study attempt to identify the counterfactual?
ii. If so, how does it do that?
iii. If not, how could that be done if you were going to redo the study?
8. Summary
a. Internal validity
i. Are the measurement valid and reliable?
ii. Are the conclusions drawn accurate?
iii. If the study is attempting causality, ensure there are no spurious variables and no selection bias.
iv. If the study is descriptive, the bar is lower, but you should still evaluate whether the results are believable based on the research design.
b. External validity
i. Can we apply the results learned in this study to other people in other places at other times?
ii. Do you think the results apply to your school and your context? Why or why not?
