Jim is a corrections officer with the rank of sergeant. He has been with the Federal Bureau of Corrections for 10 years. He has a college degree and an excellent work record. He is known as an officer that the inmates like because he is fair and does not abuse his authority. An inmate approaches Jim and tells him that he has a sick mother. He asks Jim to use his cell phone to make the call. The inmate appears to be very sincere, however, Jim knows that prison rules prohibit the officers from giving anything to the inmates. The prison is on a 2 week lock down, and phones normally available to the inmates, are not available This inmate has previously given information to Jim about an inmate who assaulted a corrections officer. Jim loans the inmate the cell phone, but tells him he wants it back as soon as the call is made. The inmate makes the call,, but refuses to give the phone back to Jim. The inmate knows Jim will punished, perhaps fired if the administration finds out that he has the sergeant's cell phone . A co-worker of Jim's saw the inmate with the phone and knows Jim loaned the phone to him.
Analyze the dilemma using any and all ethical terms you feel appropriate from the chapters of the text and from the assignments. Analyze Jim's actions, his coworker, and the inmate's actions. Please note: Approximately 60 percent of your exam score will come from how well you write and analyze the dilemma. The other 40 percent will come from how well you use ethical terms from the textbook chapters and the writing assignments. When using the ethical terms, it is always a good idea to begin your analysis by determining if the dilemma is Teleological or Deontological. If the dilemma is Deontological, then there are many terms that would come under this ethics, and the same is true for teleological ethics. Discuss any potential punishment any of the people named in the dilemma, should receive.Take your time and do a good job. Use your writing assignments and appropriate terms from the textbook. I will deduct points for terms used incorrectly. It is best to begin by naming the "major ethics" and proceeding from there. Please do not contact me about your grade on the exam
