Progression Assignment: The Conversation Essay

Write a 1500 to 2000 word essay that stages an intellectual conversation among at least two written texts and an exhibit of your choosing. At least one of your written texts should be selected from the course readings assigned in Progression 2. As an exhibit, you might select a current event, a news story, a performance, a speech, an image, or any other cultural object that carries the potential for rich analysis and that speaks to some of the key issues in the texts we've been reading.[1] Your essay should make an arguable claim about an idea raised by your sources, and your exhibit should help you refine your thinking about that idea; your claim should not be aboutyour exhibit's content per se, but about the ideas that it allows you to see more clearly.

The underlying premise of the second progression is that ideas do not exist in a vacuum; rather, they are produced in response to, and made possible by, other ideas. We use the metaphor of conversation to describe the central task of the P2 essay because it requires that you recognize the existence of an ongoing dialogue among thinkers, whether actual or imagined;that you listen carefully to what other writers are saying (by reading their texts closely); that you acknowledge and consider the meaning of their projects, including claims, concepts, and questions;and, most importantly, that you contribute to the conversation by developing your own ideas in response to what's already been said. Your thesis should reflect your own contribution to the critical conversation.

Your essay should include a description of your exhibit and/or a copy of it (if available). Be sure to include quotations, parenthetical citations, and a Works Cited list formatted according to MLA style.

[1] A note about vocabulary: In UW, we use the term "exhibit" rather than "example" to connote a site of sustained and expansive engagement. While an example merely affirms an argument, an exhibit is dynamic; indeed, the exhibit itself may raise problems with our status quo understanding. Through careful analysis, our developing ideas about the exhibit may change or challenge our initial assumptions.

Hello, this is the student in need of help. The exhibit I will be using is Donald Trump's Inauguration Speech: FULL TRANSCRIPT: TRUMP INAUGURAL ADDRESS

The two written pieces I will be using are "Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism" and "Rooted Cosmopolitanism".

How do Trumpian ideas of patriotism and nationalism challenge the ideas of Nussbaum and Stanton, with thier focus on cosmopolitanism and world citizenship?

Please ensure that the evidence used in the two written essays doesn't just prove the thesis, but that it evolves and provides nuance for the thesis. Reference Rosenwasser (attached) for examples on how to evolve and nuance the thesis using the "10 on 1" method.

1.Introduction Exhibit

6.Description/summary of project/ideas of Source 2 (AS NECESSARY)
