Essay - Media Analysis
Key task:
You are to write an essay that analyses a key social issue in contemporary Australia and how this is represented in the media.
In this you are to choose a social issue and discuss:
• How this issue and people that have been affected by this issue have been represented
• The implications of such representations, for instance, on public opinion, public policy or service delivery
In your responses you are to critically analyse the representation of the social issue, using the method of frame analysis to inform your critique.
You are to discuss at least 2 key frames used to describe this social issue and the people affected by the social issue.
You are to choose one of the following topic areas:
• Unemployment
• War on drugs or drug law reform
• Juvenile detention
• Detention of asylum seekers
You are to research and analyse this topic area as it is presented in Australian media using a frame analysis. This is by selecting at least 6 recent media articles from a variety of different Australian media publications or websites (no older than 5 years old) on this key topic areas.
To provide context for you are also to consult at least 3 academic or Australian or NSW government reports on the same key topic. Academic sources may include chapters in Australian textbooks or Australian peer-reviewed publications. You are also to appropriately reference at least one source that describe frame analysis technique.
