In the opening chapters of Sula, Toni Morrison describes the experiences of Shadrack, a young soldierin World War One. She also details his return home. Based on these accounts, consider how his trauma and subsequent mistreatment shape his identity, and specifically how they lead him to create National Suicide Day. How is this a logical-or, perhaps, illogical-response to his experience? How is he treated by the community? What does this tell us about both the individual and the society in which he lives?
