Classical Foundations
A study of the ancient Greco-Roman world. Original sources of history, art, philosophy, poetry, and drama are consulted. The objective is to compare and contrast works of key thinkers to trace the evolution of ideas. Focus is on individuals who contributed to the shaping of classical civilization.
This course explores the foundations of the Western world in the ancient Mediterranean civilizations of Greece and Rome. This course discusses the Middle Eastern and Egyptian influences on Greek culture, as well as the innovative contributions of the Greeks themselves to epic, drama, philosophy, history, art, architecture, and forms of government. Social life, the role of religion, the interplay of politics and war, and the position of women and slaves in Greek and Roman society will be included.
The contributions of the Hellenistic Age to the spread of Greek language and culture and to achievements in mathematics, astronomy, town planning, philosophy, and religion will be explored. The rise of the Roman Republic and the development of Greco-Roman culture form the next section of the course. Finally, emphasis will be on the Roman Empire and its legacy to the Western world in terms of literature, religion, law, engineering, and government.
