Choose one theory/approach of discourse analysis covered in the unit, such as politeness, conversation analysis, speech act theory, or critical discourse analysis and write an essay critiquing the theory.

This assignment has two parts: a theoretical critique and a practical discussion. The theoretical critique may focus on two or more of the following aspects:

the theory's aims, its principles, its methods for analysing discourse or the tools used for the analysis of discourse. The practical discussion should explain how the theoretical concepts can be applied to language teaching/learning.

Use/understanding of concepts and metalanguage associated with the theory you are writing about is an important aspect of this assignment.

You are expected to use between 6 and 8 references in this assignment excluding the prescribed textbooks.
