Assignment - Reading Track Essay
Description - Prompt - Write an essay about two of the stories from your reading track, in which you develop a clear argument about the text and its relationship to the history and genre conventions of speculative fiction, guided by the key terms and prompts associated with your reading track's central topics. Identify and analyze the authors' overall message and purpose in your chosen stories, using textual evidence (specific rhetorical choices made in those stories), and evidence drawn from (assigned) secondary sources. Quote and cite specific and relevant details of the texts and develop close readings of chosen details from the stories to support your argument about how these stories affect our understanding of what speculative fiction is.
Your argument should make its intellectual stakes clear by addressing vocabularies, debates, and questions drawn from our class texts. In this draft, you should attempt to develop one central insight or argument connecting the two stories to the course theme and one or more of its key terms. You need not address every single aspect of speculative fiction, or your reading track. Try to cover one or two key terms in detail rather than trying to cover many key terms in a shallow way. Using the secondary sources, craft an argument that functions as part of an ongoing dialogue about speculative fiction. Note: "arguable" in this contexts means that your claim requires evidence, and it means that while it may be defensible, someone can disagree with you.
Components and Specifications - Your essay should be at least 1400 words (keep in mind that the final draft should be 1500-1800). Your essay should include at least 2 non-fiction secondary sources, drawn from assigned texts (such as those in your reading packet). Cited using the conventions of MLA format. A formal bibliography is not required for this draft, but please provide in-text citations.
