To write an effective critical analysis, you must;
Choose a theme to focus your essay.
Name the work discussed, and identify the author.
Provide a very brief plot summary.
Relate some aspect of that plot to the topic you have chosen to address.
Provide a thesis statement.
Indicate the way you plan to develop your argument (support your claim).
Search and read all session materials carefully; you must also do some research outside the literature we have been reading. There is "off the page" work you will need to do to connect your paper with the main focus of the course.
Your responses will be evaluated based on several elements (see the bottom of this sheet for point values), but most importantly, whether and how well you provide examples and support for your position.
You should write at least a 5 page research essay that demonstrates your ability to interpret and to discuss literature. Like the close analysis essay, this essay should have a clearly defined argument, shown in the thesis statement, and it should use close analysis of the literature to demonstrate the argument. You may draw on multiple texts, but be careful that the paper stays focused if you do so.
You may also want to use only one text for your paper.
To write this essay, you should choose the topic that concerns you most, and then focus it according to your interests. In doing so, you should be sure to show that you understand the literary work in its social and historical context. Your thesis should be as specific as possible and your argument should be organized, original, and plausible. Each paragraph should have a clear topic idea, which develops your argument.
Every paragraph should adduce evidence in support of its central claim (most of this evidence will be in the form of short quotations from the text and from secondary sources) and it should analyze that evidence in terms of the claim (show the reader how the evidence proves the claim that you make about it). You should use the secondary sources to position your argument in a critical debate about the work on which you are focusing.
Again, this Research Essay is 20 points total. You should write at least five pages (1200-1500 Word). All essays and work completed at home must be typed (in 12-point Times New Roman font), Dabbled -spaced. The essays will be accepted via email.
Here is the instructions for the final. 1200 words double space.
