paper prompt :

Historians rely on a variety of primary sources in order to achieve a thorough and balanced understanding of the past. A very popular type of primary source is the newspapers published during the period that is being studied. Although not always unbiased, newspapers provide first-hand accounts of events or important figures. Since this semester we are focusing on social justice, you should pick one Latin American individual who has fought for social justice from any period and region. Your job is to examine how contemporary American newspapers portrayed him or her.

You should provide reports from two different newspapers (the Oviatt Library has a great online collection of newspapers that are easy to access such as The New York Times, The LA Times, and The Chicago Defender, to name a few). In your essay you should include your own definition of social justice and a brief explanation of why you chose the individual. You must also include a brief analysis of the historical period in which the individual lived with a special focus on the ways in which she/he fought for social justice. For this part of the assignment you can rely on lecture notes but you must also use at least one additional text on the topic. Make sure your paper is fully and consistently footnoted.

The paper should be no less than 3 pages in length, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch and pages numbered. Please include a front page with your name and paper title.
