Assessment item 1

Task

You are required to prepare for this Assessment Item by:

1. READING the Subject outline,

2. COMPLETING Topic 1 Finding a suitable Capstone research project and

3. PLANNING for your Project and Assessment Tasks in ITC571 early and BEFORE the start of session.

While this is unusual, it is necessary so that you will be prepared and ready to start from Day 1 of session. You can't afford to delay topic selection and so you should complete Task 1 by the DUE DATE at the end of Week 2 at the latest, as you will fall behind schedule and it can be hard to keep up to date.

The Project Title and Abstract of headings below will guide your thinking on the project.

Project Title and Abstract

The project title and abstract is your starting point. It is a document upon which the full Project Proposal and Plan will be based in the next assessment task.

1. Project Title: 12-15 words maximum

2. Abstract: 150 words on the list a to e below (as best as you can by week 2)
a. Project Problem Domain: Why are you doing this? Is the Key Research Question ready?
b. Background/Context/Description: Workplace or personal project?
c. Project Aim/Objectives:
d. Deliverables/Outcomes:
e. Resources:

Project Blog Setup

• Your Project Blog is required for Weekly Progress Reports and other content such as project activities and copies of the Assessment Tasks.
• The blog will store entries made by you throughout the subject to document the project stages and milestones, seminar notes and other important notes.
• On campus Study students: Your local lecturer may advise on a suitable alternative process if studying on-campus.
• Setup the site and and enter a suitable TITLE for your blog (e.g. Joe's Wireless Technology Project) - not your full name. For WEB ADDRESS - use your student number as your account name (URL) or other unique identifier.
• Make a first post - a short introduction about you and the project (Who are you? What do you do? What is your Experience and Interest in this Project?) - remember to save, then Publish the blog entry. Check with a friend or family member to ensure that he/she can see your first posting. This is also to check you have the right URL to include in this proposal and plan for your project.
• Post a copy of the BLOG address to to the DISCUSSION FORUM in order to share with others and to demonstrate that you are underway in the subject.

Assessment item 2 - Project Proposal and Plan

Task

You are required to prepare for this Assessment Item by:
1. READING the Subject outline,
2. COMPLETING Topic 2 Project Planning
3. BUILDING your PLAN up from the Project Title and Abstract in Assessment Task 1
WHAT TO DO:
1. Follow the Study Schedule and work with the Topics in Interact as they provide a "scaffold" for your learning in this subject.
2. Develop a detailed Capstone Project Proposal and Plan using project management software (as listed in the Study Schedule) and the skills you have acquired from IT Project Management to develop a project plan with a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), milestones and Gantt chart.
3. Begin using the 'project blog' as a tool beyond the weekly progress reportsfor your chosen emerging technology topic:
1. The blog helps you to "think by writing" and also store your notes, project files and links in a cloud-based service.
2. Consider sharing the site with your peers as a way to tell a story and harness each others knowledge.
4. The blog is ideally updated each week with 3 or 4 entries for documenting your project notes and as the foundation for editing and writing the Capstone Project Report. An ideal blog entry will have around 50-150 words (150-600 words a week).

Assessment item - Annotated Bibliography and Journal Synopsis

Task
You are required to prepare for this Assessment Item by:
1. READING the Subject outline,
2. COMPLETING Topic 3, 4 and 5 on sections that discuss how to do an Annoatated Bibliography and a Journal Synopsis paper.

TASK 1

Annotated Bibliography

1. Write an Annotated Bibliography for your Capstone Topic with a collection of 12 articles following a set structure. The Annotated Bibliography is a critical examination of the most relevant and recent scholarly research on the topic area that is not just a summary of the articles you have read.

2. An Annotated Bibliography is a detailed analysis of sources that can be used later in an expanded Literature Review.

3. Use the latest online search tools (CSU PRIMO, Google Scholar, Online databases) and efficient bibliographic organisers - CSU supports the use of EndNote. (available on iPad). EndNote is a bibliographic citation program, allowing references and footnotes to be translated into a variety of standard formats.

4. As a CSU student you can download and install EndNote X7 for Windows or Mac OS platforms

5. Ensure that the Annotated Bibliography submitted by you is your own work and has not been submitted elsewhere and comply with the University's requirements for academic integrity.

6. You can get help in Building and Writing an Annotated Bibliography from several
Topics in the ITC571 Interact2 site sidebar menu and other study advice and tips from:

7. Review the emerging technology (use internet for journals, conference papers, magazines, news articles, online databases, eBooks) and submit a 12-article Annotated Bibliography on your topic.

8. A good place to start a collection of articles in your annotated bibliography

The following questions may be useful while reviewing the topic:

1. What is the new technology?

2. What does it do and what are the special features it has?

3. When is it coming out in the market and how much will it cost?

4. What industry will the new technology affect? (Medical, agricultural, computer, business, etc....).

5. In your opinion, will the new technology be beneficial to society? Why or why not.

6. What did you learn from a critical analysis of your sources of information on this new technology?

TASK 2 Write a 120-200 word Journal Synopsis paper based on your Task

The purpose of this final assessment activity is to produce a 120-200 word Journal Synopsis paper on your findings, lessons learnt and a discussion that will be supported by your annotated bibliography with references from respected sources. After submission, post a copy to share with your peers on the ITC571 Discussion Forum.

The challenge is to communicate the most about your project in the least amount of words.

What is a synopsis?
It is another name for an Abstract, that you will have read at the beginning of academic journal articles when researching your A4 Annotated Bibliography. If you have read these synopses or abstracts, you'll already know that they are:

"a summary of the article; its arguments and conclusion."

The journal abstract or synopsis was very useful to you perhaps, in helping you to decide if an article is relevant to your research, and in deciding the worth of futher reading and are an integral feature of most conferences. The presenters are required to submit an abstract or synopsis of their papers, which conference delegates later receive. This helps the delegates decide which presentation they will attend. So you need to be convincing with your synopsis and include an overview of your arguments and conclusions. Synopses are generally only one or two paragraphs long, and they are placed at the beginning of the paper.

Rationale
This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:
• be able to perform literature searches and critically analyse the literature in the chosen topic.
• be able to critically reflect on and synthesize complex information, problems, concepts and theories in the chosen topic.
• be able to apply established research methodologies with autonomy.
• be able to apply project management and information and communication technologies (ICT) tools to plan, execute, record and present their research and project work as a capstone experience.

The rationale of this assessment is to test your ability to review, evaluate, critique and support others opinions as well as existing literature, using a scholarly writing style. You will also demonstrate your ability to carry out independently research and locate information from various sources such as journals, conference proceedings, online databases, eBooks and industry magazines.

What does a well constructed annotated bibliography contain?
That is a research topic on its own, however I recommend the list of SIX structural elements below
1. Interpretation and evaluation of an overview of recent trends in emerging technologies and innovation;
2. Evidence of literature searches and critical analysis of the literature in the chosen capstone topic;
3. Critical reflection and synthesis of complex information, problems, concepts and theories in the chosen topic;
4. Original opinion on the benefits of your capstone project to others;
5. Reflective comments on what was learnt from a review of the literature;
6. Use of correct citations and referencing conforming to recognised referencing format.

Task 2

After studying something quite intensely in task 1 Annotated Bibliography, you are now an expert in that area of research. As such, you need to be able to present that knowledge as a compact 120 to 200 word Journal Synopsis paper as a final demonstration of your knowledge and understanding in deploying a range of research principles, methodologies and academic writing skills.

Research is defined in the AQF as follows: "Research comprises systematic experimental and theoretical work, application and/or development that results in an increase in the dimensions of knowledge."

Your ITC571 research includes original, exploratory, experimental, applied, clinically or work- based, and other forms of creative work undertaken systematically to increase knowledge and understanding, deploying a range of research principles and methodologies.

The aims of this Journal exercise are based and modified on those for which CORE was established:
• to create a professional journal experience for those postgraduate students engaged in computer science and information technology in higher education and research institutes and to facilitate their research skills development;
• to assist and advance research in computer science and information technology in higher education and research institutes;
• to assist and advance teaching and research in computer science and information technology in higher education;

Assessment item - Final Report and Presentation

Task

You are required to prepare for this Assessment Item by:
1. READING the Subject outline,
2. COMPLETING Topic 4 Research Writing for Task 1 Final Report
3. COMPLETING Topic 5 Communicating a report (oral presentation) for Task 2 Presentation
Project Closure is an important final step in project management. As part of closing down
your project, you are required to communicate about the results, findings, conclusion and lessons learnt from your Project.

Report and Seminar Script Length: While the word length for the Report and Seminar is stated at 1500 to 2000 words approx., this may vary due to the nature of the project, advice from your lecturer and presentation modes. You are the best judge at this stage on length, together with advice from your lecturer. So your Report and Seminar Presentation can be done with some variation as long as you complete the TWO steps as described below. Use the marking criteria as a checklist for completed tasks.

WHAT TO DO:
You will be asked to communicate about your project in both written and oral formats:
1. Task 1: Final Report (as PDF and as a Final Post in Project Blog)
2. Task 2: Seminar Presentation
The seminar is an oral, live to class or pre-recorded presentation as advised by your lecturer, as to the best format and presentation logistics for each class.
Submit to EASTS both a cover page with Blog address (or Cloud site access link for big files), the Report and the Seminar presentation file (or cloud site access or Website etc.).

1. TASK 1 Final Report in the Blog
1. For the written report, this should be a final blog entry to close the project. (NOTE: your local lecturer may suggest an alternative report format)
2. The written report entry can discuss the results, findings, conclusion and
lessons learnt from your Project Research Aims and Outcomes.
3. NOTE: the content of the Report should also be a the source for developing the script or outline for the presentation seminar in Step 2.
4. Ensure that the Project Blog Report is your own work and has not been submitted elsewhere and complies with the University's requirements for academic integrity.

2. TASK 2 Presentation Seminar
1. The time has been deliberately limited to 10 minutes to force you into selecting the most appropriate subset of information to present for this situation and you will be heavily penalised if you take more than 15 minutes.
2. NOTE: If doing a video presentation (MP4 file, YouTube, Vimeo, Voice-over- PowerPoint etc.) then try to halve the time for the online audience e.g. 6 - 10 minutes
3. This seminar will vary according to your study mode and so can be done either/or:
1. live to class of peers - if studying on campus, then question time is not part of the presentation time.
2. pre-recorded video presentation - if studying online mode then technical production of the audio and video is considered in lieu of question time.

3. If you are planning to do a research Masters, Professional Doctorate or a PhD after this course, then one variation for the seminar may be to do a Poster Presentation Seminar#. See details below the line.
4. The seminar should be accompanied by appropriate audio/visual tools such as a set of presentation slides or examples of hardware/software/systems that are necessary for the audience to understand and follow your presentation.
5. On campus students can ask your local supervisor for the date, time you will be presenting.
6. Presenting a seminar also demonstrates that you have understood the project work that has been carried out.
Rationale
This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:
• be able to apply project management and information and communication technologies (ICT) tools to plan, execute, record and present their research and project work as a capstone experience.
• be able to demonstrate advanced communication skills in transmitting their capstone experiences and ideas.
• be able to justify to an audience of peers any conclusions and professional decisions made that contribute to creating new knowledge.
