Human Resource Management Principles - Analytical Report Assignment

Description of Task: You are to write an analytical report relating to managing diversity in a Human Resource Management (HRM) context. The task includes:

i. Choosing a diversity topic (choose one of the topics below).

ii. Choosing two areas of HRM (see below) to focus on (i.e. the strategic and operational approach to the issue).

iii. Searching the literature for relevant theories, concepts, and empirical findings.

iv. Writing a report that provides an in-depth analysis of the diversity issue using relevant literature (identified at iii.).

v. Providing a minimum of four clear recommendations (i.e., two for each HRM area) on policies and practices which should be developed and/or implemented by HR to address the chosen diversity topic and that refer to the topic scenario. These recommendations need to be clearly derived from the in-depth analysis (identified in iv) and supported by references.

vi. Including a minimum of EIGHT (8) scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles published in the last 10 years as references. In-text references are required to support all the arguments presented in the report and must be referenced in the reference list. You may cite the textbook and include articles dated prior to the last 10 years, but this does not count towards the minimum eight scholarly, peer-reviewed journal article references. Do not use other books or textbooks as references. Also, do not use website materials (including dictionaries, encyclopaedias, business magazines available online, and blog posts) as these are not scholarly, peer reviewed sources and should be avoided in academic writing.

Assignment Topics: Diversity in the Workplace

Choose ONE of the following diversity issues:

Topic 1: Older Adults in Organisations

You started working at a new firm as a Strategic HR Consultant. Your boss, the Chief Operating Officer (COO), has some concerns about one of the departments, which has been underperforming in both productivity and staff satisfaction. You meet with the department manager, Garrett Greeves, to learn more about the department. In this discussion, Garrett makes some concerning comments about older workers. He mentions Alf, an older worker nearing retirement age, regularly getting behind in his work. You suggest that Alf might need further skills training, but Garrett replies 'Why bother? He won't be around much longer,' and laughs. After observing the department, you also notice Garrett doesn't consider older workers to be viable applicants; new employees tend to be young and inexperienced, and turnover is high in the department. You discuss the situation with the COO and she suggests introducing some new diversity policies that will recognise older workers as a strategic advantage. She asks that you write a report that uses recent, empirical research to provide an in-depth analysis of the diversity issue in the context of HRM and clear research-driven recommendations for resolving the issue.

Topic 2: Women in Management

You are the HR Manager of a multi-national organisation. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Craig Carlisle, voiced some concerns regarding the gender diversity of his top managers. There are five regional directors reporting to the CEO; all of them are men. Further, there are 18 assistant directors working closely with the regional directors, but only 2 of these are women. Craig has read that a gender diverse senior management team can improve the financial performance of a company and improve employee engagement. Last week, Craig brought his concerns about the lack of women in management to the board of directors and suggested introducing some new gender diversity policies that will recognise women in management as a strategic advantage. The Board has requested a report that uses recent, empirical research to provide an in-depth analysis of the diversity issue in the context of HRM and clear research-driven recommendations for resolving the issue.

Assignment Focus: HRM Areas of Practice

The purpose of this assessment is to help you gain a deep and critical understanding of HRM theory, processes and their practical implications and extend your skills in independent research, critical thinking and academic writing. Therefore, you must choose two areas of HRM that you will focus on when addressing your chosen diversity issue.

Choose TWO (2) Human Resource Management (HRM) areas of practice to focus on:

  • Job Enrichment and Quality of Work Life - E.g. integrating quality of work life programs to attract and/or retain diverse employees
  • Recruitment - E.g. targeted recruitment to attract diverse job applicants
  • Selection - E.g. reducing bias/ barriers preventing diverse job applicants being selected
  • Appraising and Managing Performance - E.g. reducing bias in evaluations of diverse employees
  • Human Resource Development - E.g. improving training and development opportunities for diverse employees
  • Rewarding Human Resources - E.g. introducing/changing reward systems to recognise skills/abilities of diverse employees
